Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala boosts Bitcoin holdings amid crypto slump

Investing.com -- Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Co. and its unit increased their positions in BlackRock's Bitcoin ETF during the fourth quarter of 2025, even as cryptocurrency prices fell sharply.

The sovereign wealth fund raised its stake in the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF by 46% to 12.7 million shares as of December 31, according to a regulatory filing. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi Investment Council (ADIC), an independently-run Mubadala unit, increased its position by 3% to 8.2 million shares through a subsidiary.

Together, their combined stakes were valued at more than $1 billion based on the funds' filings, though specific purchase prices were not disclosed. The ETF, which tracks Bitcoin's value, lost over 23% in the fourth quarter of 2025 and has declined by more than a fifth so far in 2026.

Bitcoin has been under pressure since falling from its October peak of $126,000. The cryptocurrency has experienced a four-week decline, bringing its as low as $67,000 amid broader market volatility.

ADIC CEO Saeed Al Mazrouei told Bloomberg News earlier this month that the fund is making bold investments in several sectors, including blockchain startups.

Abu Dhabi manages funds overseeing nearly $2 trillion in assets, with some expanding into the cryptocurrency sector recently. MGX, an artificial intelligence investor co-created by Mubadala, purchased a $2 billion stake in Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, in 2025.
