iTunes is Too Awesome, Wal-Mart (WMT) Succumbs to Pressure (AAPL)

August 10, 2011 11:33 AM EDT
Another one bites the dust.

According to reports Wednesday, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) has now beaten Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) in the digital music arena. Though Wal-Mart has had it's mp3.walmart.com store up for some eight years, the company announced it will close down on August 28th. Wal-Mart notes in a letter to distribution and licensing partners that "All content in the Store will be disabled and no longer available for download from the store."

Though Wal-Mart offered music for 88 cents per MP3, Apple's iTunes proved superior, with it's iPod and iPhone integration and better user interface.

Wal-Mart will reportedly keep supporting older, copy-protected songs.
