iRobot Corporation (Nasdaq: IRBT) is up Monday on strong volume following reports over the weekend that Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) acquired a segment peer.
Google acquired Boston Dynamics, which is most-famously known for creating four-legged robot prototypes which have demonstrated to not only be stable, but can also be very fast. The company's Cheetah robot set a robot land speed record recently after hitting over 28 miles per hour on a treadmill. That's 1 MPH faster than current 100 meter sprint record-holder Usain Bolt.
iRobot, on the other hand, is famous for its Roomba vacuum, which cleans your rug with virtually no user input. The company is also a contractor for the U.S. government and, with Boston Dynamics out of the way (Google won't pursue government contracts once the ones Boston Dynamics is already committed to expire), that leaves room for iRobot to see more activity. The company has worked with the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command's tank and automotive center (TARDEC) on its 710 Warrior: a 300-pound robot that can carry 350-pounds on one arm. The 710 is pictured below.
Shares of iRobot are up 5.5 percent.
