iPhone 4S Demand May Have Exceeded Even Apple's (AAPL) Lofty Expectations

Though it's no iPhone 5, Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone 4S has been met with heavy demand.

Is that to anyone's surprise?

But demand might be heavy even beyond what Apple was anticipating. Initially selling about 1 million devices within the first 24 hours, reports Thursday suggest supplier Pegatron Technology may be receiving orders to build an additional 5 million units.

Here's the fun part: Pegatron isn't the largest iPhone supplier... Foxconn is. AllThingsD noted earlier Pegatron was only scheduled to produce about 15 percent of total demand, and not even begin deliveries until early into 2012. At that number, total iPhone 4S demand might hover somewhere around 33 or 34 million units.

Numbers indicate Apple may be able to keep up with demand, at least through the end of the year. Numbers also indicate that no matter the name, an iPhone sells.

Apple shares are up 0.77 percent pre-market Thursday.
