eBay's (EBAY) Q3 Results Give Investors A Sour Taste

Shares of auction site eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) are under heavy pressure in after-hours action Wednesday as the company's lackluster third quarter results and fourth quarter guidance gave investors little motivation to keep their share or buy more. Shares of eBay are down 6% at last check.

eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) reported Q3 EPS of $0.38, ex-items, 1 cent better than the analyst estimate of $0.37 but down from $0.46 last year. Revenue for the quarter rose 6% to $2.2 billion, which compares to the estimate of $2.14 billion. GAAP operating margin decreased to 19.8%, versus 24.7% last year, and Non-GAAP operating margin decreased to 28.4% for the quarter, compared to 31.8%.

For Q4, eBay sees adj-EPS of $0.38-$0.40, versus the consensus of $0.40, and sales of $2.20-$2.30 billion, versus the consensus of $2.26 billion.

On its conference call, eBay CEO John Donahoe noted that PayPal is gaining market share. He also said PayPal Bill Me Later is on twice as many sites and they will open a third party platform on Nov 3. Says the company's strategies are working. The company said they are cautiously optimistic about the holiday season.
