According to EnvisionIP, Zynga's (Nasdaq: ZNGA) move to become more relevant took big strides in 2012. From holding just one U.S. patent and having nine published U.S. patent apps last February, the firm identified that Zynga now has 36 pending apps and 89 U.S. patents. Quite the jump in just one year.
About 38 of those patents came with the acquisition of Walker Digital and 33 of those relate to casino gaming and gambling technology. EnvisionIP explained, "The patents acquired from Walker Digital relate to software and methods for facilitating multi-player casino-style gaming, and for processing various casino-style wagering and payout schemes."
Other patents were developed internally and relate to items like in-game currency management, multi-user online gaming, gifting, social networking features, and more.
Shares of Zynga are up modestly in early trading Friday.
