Your Music, Your Vote, Your Pandora (P) Ad

While it might seem like common sense that those who listen to Bob Marley on the regular might be Democrats, one Internet radio company is trying to hone-in that data, package it up, and sell it.

The WSJ said today that Pandora Media (NYSE: P) is looking to unveil a new advertising service next week which will allow political candidates and organizations to better target their message.

Pandora will go about doing this by matching election results with subscribers' musical preferences by ZIP code. The company will then label users' based on listening preferences and whether those artists are generally enjoyed by Democratic or Republican supporters.

Pandora does not require users to disclose political affiliations when creating an account or anytime thereafter. The company last reported having about 73 million monthly active listeners.

Aside from listening preferences, we assume that all other information linked to a listener would be kept private.

While it might seem like a trickster move by Pandora, the WSJ does offer some relief; it noted that Republican candidate Michelle 'Turner Overdive' Bachmann advertised to Facebook users ahead of the 2011 Iowa Straw Poll, targeting those who identified as Tea Party supporters or those interested in Christian rock.

And that's as far into politics as we're going to go with this story.

Shares of Pandora are lower in early trading.
