But, does cool = profits?
According to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, about half of 853 respondents between ages of 18 and 19 thought Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) was a "cooler" brand than it was a year or so ago. That compares with just 42 percent for Facebook (Nasdaq: FB), and 47 percent for Twitter.
Of course, 60 percent said Apple was cooler, while 70 percent gave Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android kudos.
For Microsoft, the jump is significant. Having been criticized for not making new, innovative products, or embracing social media as much as it should, has come a long way with the introduction of the Kinect and new Windows 8 platform. Users of Windows 8 liked how the operating system was "less rigid" than Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) structure, particularly with the Windows Phone 8 platform.
Some estimates have about 900,000 Surface tablets being sold in Q412, versus the 23 million iPads sold by Apple. Microsoft's smartphone market share still stands at about 3 percent, versus 70 percent and 21 percent for Android and Apple's iOS, respectively.
While being cool is important for locking down the next generation of users (and consumers), Microsoft will still need to put its nose to the grindstone if it hopes to gain a following similar to its "hip" peers.
Shares are down about 0.8 percent Thursday morning.
