Yellen Passes Next Hurdle En Route to Becoming Next Fed Chairman

November 21, 2013 11:24 AM EST
Janet Yellen is one-step closer to becoming a full-fledged Federal Reserve chairman.

Yellen received a 14 to 8 vote approving her for the position by the Senate Banking Committee today. Positive votes were given by 11 of 12 voting Democrats along with three Republicans. Supporting Republican Senators were Bob Corker (Tenn.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), and Mark Kirk (Ill.). The opposing Democrat was Joe Manchin (W.V.).

With six Senate Republicans supporting the nomination, Yellen is lined-up to receive the 60 Senate votes needed to succeed Ben Bernanke in the role. Only one of 59 Democrats has voiced opposition (Manchin).

Senator Tim Johnson (D - S.D.) commented today, As we saw in her testimony last week, Dr. Yellen understands the challenges facing our economy and the balance the Fed must strike as we navigate the path back to full employment.

Corker noted that he sees Yellen as qualified, but sees her needing to become more familiar with systemic financial regulation.

Nebraska's Mike Johanns also opposes Yellen as Fed chair, saying, I cannot support Ms. Yellen’s nomination because, given many opportunities, she never did distance herself from these easy-money policies ... The Fed has gone too far in trying to stimulate the economy and these sweeteners can’t go on forever. While the market has enjoyed this sugar high, it is unsustainable.

The final Senate vote is likely to take place in December. U.S. markets are largely higher on Thursday's session.
