Yahoo! (YHOO)/Microsoft (MSFT) Deal Talks: A Lesson in Nothingness

May 5, 2009 2:09 PM EDT
Oh bother. That is what I feel about the Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) and Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) "hot and heavy" deal talks, which are said to be getting close according to various industry blogs.

This has to be one of the most idiotic corporate dramas I've ever seen play out: They are doing a deal, they're not. Ballmer said talks are on, Ballmer said talks are off. Yahoo's new CEO didn't mention a deal on the conference call, but she cussed up a storm. Ballmer is visiting Silicon Vally. Ballmer sneezed twice. Give me a break already!

Really, what does it mean if they do a deal? They are both losers in monetizing online revenue with Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) wiping the floor with them. Remember the hype with Yahoo's Panama? What a joke that was. FTC antitrust pressure on Google may be the only way these two can make money online.
