In what may be a sign of the times, Google, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG) is expected to step up their hiring this year, while rival Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) announced that they will be making further staff cuts.
Today, Yahoo! said that about 140 positions, amounting to just under 1% of their 14,100 employees, will be terminated.
On the other hand, Google reported on their Google Blog that they will be adding more than 6,000 people to their roster. The note, from SVP Alan Eustace, said that 2011 will be their biggest hiring year ever, surpassing the record 6,000 hires in 2007.
Google brought on 4,500 in 2010, bulging their staff to 24,400.
The move comes upon changing of the ranks at the top, with co-founder Larry Page now taking over from Eric Schmidt, and as the company looks to compete more with Groupon and LivingSocial with the launch of Google Offers.
Yahoo! shares are 0.8% lower into the close, while Google is up nearly 1%.
