It could happen, Digitimes says. Sources told the Taiwan-based news source that names like Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL), Samsung, High Tech Computer (HTC), and others will be adopting ultra-thin heat pipes. The first smartphones implemented with the devices could show up in Q413, sources said.
Traditional methods of cooling smartphones called for a graphite plus foil system. However, more devices moving to energy-hungry 4G networks means that the method is no longer capable of dissipating the heat generated by smartphones.
NEC currently has a smartphone equipped with heat pipes. The pipes measure 0.6-millimeters (mm), versus 1.0- to 1.2-mm on ultrabooks.
Currently yield rates of about 30 percent might ebb massive early adoption, Digitimes noted.
The news is good for the smartphone industry as a whole. A cooler-running smartphone will have improved performance and a longer life. Names like ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH) and Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) have been working on faster and more efficient mobile chips, which will almost certainly require new methods of cooling.
