According to reports Tuesday, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and ARM Holdings (Nasdaq: ARMH) will officially unveil their Windows on ARM (WoA) notebooks at the end of 2012, with launch expected sometime in 2013.
Chipmakers like Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) and NVIDIA (Nasdaq: NVDA) have been working to enhance their ARM-based processors' power consumption and performance, Digitimes noted in a report. Should companies be able to pair well with Windows 8 and get Windows support, WoA devices might turn out to be formidable competitors to Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD).
So, consider this your formal warning, Intel and AMD. You only have over a year to get it figured out.
Already, Qualcomm and NVIDIA are cooperating with notebook OEMs like Asustek and Lenovo, which plan a mid-2013 WoA launch.
The companies firmly believe that the WoA setup has performance and power advantages that will allow it a smooth transition into tablet PCs.
Of course, Intel isn't standing idle. The company should launch its 22-nanometer Ivy Bridge processors -- which also consume less power than previous CPUs -- and Haswell-based processors in 2013.
Ahead of the bell Tuesday, Intel is up about 0.8 percent, while Microsoft is about 0.2 percent lower.
