Will 'Like' Become '#Like'? (FB)

March 14, 2013 4:55 PM EDT
Was the idea to sort comments and topics with a hashtag (#) that great?

Apparently, yes.

According to reports out Thursday, Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) will aim to use the symbol, more formerly known as a number sign, for users to tag specific conversations. It wasn't made clear how the tag would be integrated and there are no near-term plans to debut the new symbol.

Those whom utilize social media outlets the most will be familiar with the hashtag on one of the competing social media sites: Twitter. Twitter users are able to tag something by placing a number sign before a series of words and, in doing so, will sort their message not only to those that follow their account, but also into a larger column where similarly-tagged messages are posted. The tag would be useful for advertisers, for example, that want to build up momentum behind a certain product. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) recently used this technique is pushing to get an Instagram app on Windows Phone 8.

For Facebook, the tag would transverse both desktop and mobile, potentially increase the amount of revenue that can be drawn from advertisers.

Shares of Facebook closed 0.2 percent lower Thursday.
