According to a news release out Thursday, navigation provider TomTom is launching an app app for Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android operating system.
This is the first Android app being made available from the company for Android. Curiously, the news comes following reports in recent weeks that Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) map app, which is supported in part by TomTom (specific figures aren't available), has been performing at a less-than-stellar level.
So, is it a backdoor operation for TomTom and Apple to accelerate the quality of mapping capabilities by tapping into the millions of Android users worldwide? Given that TomTom is charging $37.99 for the app, probably not.
Shares of Apple are lower Thursday morning.
