Will Google's (GOOG) Knol Take Traffic Away From Wikipedia?

July 24, 2008 11:04 AM EDT
Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) debuted Knol earlier this week to perhaps garner more revenue from people leaving Google network of sites to head to wikipedia. Alexa ranks Wikipedia as the seventh most site for people seeking information about camping or how to run a 5 minute mile.

The thing I find interesting about Google's new Knol product is that Knol results are already appearing in the top 20 in the google index. For example, a search on Google for "tooth pain" has the knol result showing up in the top 15 results. Actually, this knol page on tooth pain is much better than what I was able to find on wikipedia. The page was produced by the Chairman of Denistry at Tufts, Noshir Mehta.

Additionally, a search for "Neonatal Sepsis" on Google has the knol page showing up in the first 13 results.
