Yesterday, it was learned that actor James Gandolfini passed away in Italy at the age of 51. He was best known as Tony Soprano on the hit HBO show "The Sopranos," winning three Emmy Awards in the process.
Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) is the world's largest eCommerce retailer. As headlines rolled out, a message was posted to Amazon's Facebook page which read like this: "Saddened to hear about the passing of James Gandolfini today. We'll miss you, James, and the memorable characters you brought to life."
Nice, right? Well, at the end of the message was a shortened link to the Amazon.com page selling season one of "The Sopranos" on DVD.
Since posting the message last night, it was deleted, but it brings to light how social media can sometimes be disconnected from real life. Most likely, it was a younger "social-media expert" making the post who didn't think it all the way through how a large corporation seemingly aiming to capitalize off of death would look.
Amazon is flat in early trading Thursday.
