Watch Education Stocks as Expanded Gov't Lending Bill Awaits Passage

September 17, 2009 11:29 AM EDT
Stocks in the Education sector could be movers today as the House is expected to pass a bill that would greatly expand the government's student lending program, effectively pushing private lenders out of the college loan business. If the bill is passed today, it will next need approval from the Senate.

Among other things, the bill would offer "Pell Grants" for needy students, reform community college applications, open a new college completion fund and offer more college aid to veterans. Supporters of the new bill argue that putting the Fed's in charge could save as much as $87 billion.

On the other side of the spectrum, opponents of the bill point out that funds would also be used for non-college related items such as construction at secondary schools, as well as new preschool programs. Further, while the move would result in an increase of these Pell Grants, it would also do nothing to reduce college costs.

Below are some Education stocks which could be active amid the news today:
  • Apollo Group (Nasdaq: APOL)
  • ITT Educational Services (NYSE: ESI)
  • DeVry (NYSE: DV)
  • Strayer Education (Nasdaq: STRA)
  • Career Education (Nasdaq: CECO)
  • Corinthian Colleges (Nasdaq: COCO)
  • Brightpoint Education (NYSE: BPI)
