Verizon (VZ) Asks Google (GOOG) to Keep Hands Off Users Wallets

December 6, 2011 9:14 AM EST
The WSJ reporting Tuesday Verizon (NYSE: VZ) has asked Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) not to install its Google Wallet app on its new line up of smartphones which are operated using the Android operating system.

Not only is Verizon asking Google to not equip the new phones (like the Galaxy Neus which is expected to be released this month), but the wireless provider is also asking the app not be available for Verizon customers in the Android app market.

The reason for this unusual request may not be that unusual at all. The WSJ notes Verizon, AT&T (NYSE: T), and T-Mobile USA all entered a joint venture offering a similar service to Google Wallet. The joint venture project is called “Isis” and allows users to make payments and redeem promotional offers through their smartphone. A trial phase is expected to begin as soon as next year.

Google has made a large investment in the development of Google Wallet; the company may have originally been hoping for a big success, substantially hyping the service recently. Going into the launch, things don’t look good if Sprint (NYSE: S), only the third largest wireless carrier in the U.S., will be the only one to allow Google to install its new app on the phone.
