Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE: UA) is in focus as tennis' U.S. Open gets underway this week.
The WSJ noted that top contender Andy Murray will be sporting Adidas shoes, amid signing a contract with Under Armour last winter. Murray did wear Under Armour shoes at several events this year, but has returned to Adidas over the last few tournaments as Under Armour continues to wear-test its upcoming sneakers.
Notably, Murray signed with Under Armour following a 10-year endorsement deal with Adidas AG.
On the switch, Murray commented, You know, you can’t take risks with those things because if you, you know, have an issue there, get blisters or twist an ankle or whatever, that can cost you ... It’s different if it’s a T-shirt or shorts. The shoes and the racquets are obviously extremely important.
Under Armour is said to fly officials in from manufacturing facilities to meet with Murray and present the latest offering from the company no matter where he is in the world. This also points to how important shoes are for the tennis pro...and sponsoring company.
Shares of Under Armour are flat early Friday.
