Ultrabook Prices to Drop, But Input Costs Remain High (HPQ) (DELL)

Though the devices haven't been on the market for too long, everyone knows that technology, particularly with home computing, tends to have a rapid fall in pricing as the months tick by. They sort of have an inverse relationship to tuition costs.

Ultrabooks are no exception. According to new data from Digitimes Wednesday morning, the price of ultrabooks should drop below the $1000 price point by the end of 2011. Information comes from such ultrabook makers as Toshiba, Acer, and Asustek.

With a $100 marketing subsidy from Intel (Nasdaq: INTC), those prices would see a 5 to 10 percent drop overall.

Digitimes also notes that Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ), Toshiba, and Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) will launch ultrabooks in the middle of November. That part is mostly true, as H-P officially unveiled its Folio ultrabook on November 16th; launch might be in December sometime.

The aim is simple, but execution more challenging. SSD and processor prices, not to mention HDDs, are creeping higher, making $1000 price point a tough target to hit. Digitimes notes that the bill-of-materials, marketing, and manufacturing costs for a 13-inch ultrabook amount to about $940.
