UPS (UPS) Front-and-Center as Some Christmas Deliveries Missed (AMZN)

United Parcel Service (NYSE: UPS) is on watch Thursday following a late holiday buying surge which caught the shipped off guard.

One spokesperson for UPS told the WSJ on Wednesday, The volume of air packages in the UPS system did exceed capacity as demand was much greater than our forecast. Patches of bad weather were also said to contribute to the delays.

FedEx (NYSE: FDX) was also reportedly hit with delays, though the company didn't issue a statement on reports.

Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) jumped into action, offering affected customers shipping refunds and a $20 gift certificate.

UPS was projecting 132 million deliveries this week and the company noted that the mark was obviously exceeded.

Shares of UPS are flat in early trading Thursday.
