UPDATE: Google (GOOG) Wants You to Pay Bills via Gmail

Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL) NASDAQ: GOOG) is said to be working on bill payment via Gmail.

According to Re/code, Google is working on a project -- tentatively dubbed Pony Express -- which will also allow Gmail users to receive bills in their email box versus their physical mailbox.

The service is expected to begin in Q4.

While this could also segue into Google becoming a more formidable mobile payments provider, challenging Apple Pay in the process, it's more likely that the service will let Google gather key financial data and expand its business offerings
