U.K.'s Chief Rabbi: Apple's (AAPL) Jobs Made Us More Selfish

The U.K.'s Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks said shoppers should be more appreciative of what they have, rather than long for what they do not own, condemning advertising for this new thought process by the global community.

The Rabbi singled out Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) co-founder and visionary, the late Steve Jobs as one of the main culprits.

Sacks said the iPad is akin to the stone tablets given to Moses by God. Now, Sacks says, the world is agog with the iPad, iPod, iPhone, and is all about "i, i, i."

Comments were made by Sacks at an interfaith reception attended by Queen Elizabeth.

The following is a quote by Sacks as published in the U.K. Guardian: "What does a consumer ethic do? It makes you aware all the time of the things you don’t have instead of thanking God for all the things you do have. If in a consumer society, through all the advertising and subtly seductive approaches to it, you’ve got an iPhone but you haven’t got a fourth generation one, the consumer society is in fact the most efficient mechanism ever devised for the creation and distribution of unhappiness."

Notably, a spokesperson for Sacks said the comments made no attempt to criticize Jobs or contributions Apple has made to society, only of what the fallout is when consumerism is taken too far.
