Twitter (TWTR) Tests 'Retweet with Context' Feature

June 24, 2014 2:32 PM EDT

Twitter (NYSE: TWTR) is testing yet another feature to enhance engagement with its user base.

According to reports out Tuesday, Twitter is looking to allow users the ability to comment when reposting something onto their feed. This would allow users to give more context/thoughts if they want to share something from another user.

Previously, in our experience, you might have had to copy and crop down another users commentary, inserting the popular "M/T" disclosure (for 'modified tweet') with your post. Not really too much of a pain, but it takes a certain metric away from Twitter; retweets and commentary can give more information to Twitter which it can sell to advertisers. Businesses that also have their posts reposted with commentary would be able to see that more easily. Should one user repost something and tag another users or two in that retweet, that's another valuable metric for advertising.

It's not clear when a full rollout is expected or if the feature would even move forward past testing.
