Like most solar companies, Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) is looking for creative ways to make a buck, and may consider buying project developers as it shifts focus to construction of power plants.
In an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos yesterday, the company’s president, Ben Hill, told investors “Trina is always open and interested in opportunities. If there is anything that is advantageous to Trina, then we’d action that.”
According to insiders, that opportunity is unlikely to take the form of added capacity, considering the current glut of solar modules and intense margin pressures in the industry that caused many companies, including Trina, to end 2012 in the red.
“I don’t think buying more module manufacturing capacity is interesting for Trina at the moment,” Hill said. “But there are other opportunities for us to expand our scope and we will certainly be looking at that.”
When asked if that meant buying project developers, he replied, “That could be a possibility.”
Other solar companies, including First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR), have already made moves in this direction.
