Touch Panel Sales to Nearly Double in 2011 - DisplaySearch

July 12, 2011 8:27 AM EDT
In a research note Tuesday morning, DisplaySearch said it expects touch panel revenue to soar in 2011.

The firm sees touch panel sales jumping about 90 percent from $7 billion last year to $13.4 billion this year.

Mobile devices will account for about tow-thirds of unit shipments, accounting for 868 million units this year. Major manufacturers looking to boost the category include Motorola (NYSE: MMI), HTC, Nokia (NYSE: NOK), LG, and more.

For tablet PCs, growth is expected to be phenomenal. From shipments of 26 million units in 2010, the number should bulge all the way up to 72 million in 2011. DisplaySearch expects tablet PC sales to slow to 100 million in 2012. Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPad and Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based devices will be the biggest contributors in this category.

Other markets expected to grow include gaming and automotive. Gaming will be attributable in part to Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) Kinect for Xbox, as well as Nintendo's 3DS.
