Wall Street and Main Street alike are saddened by the news overnight that Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) visionary co-founder Steve Jobs has died following a long public battle with cancer. He was 56.
Shareholders of Apple are taking the news in stride, with shares down just 0.6 percent, despite the loss of its most important visionary. With Jobs stepping down from the CEO job in late-August, investors were prepared that this day would come.
Fittingly, Apple's homepage has turned into page honoring Mr. Jobs and a special e-mail has been set-up to share thoughts, memories, and condolences. A makeshift shrine at the company's New York store has been developing since Wednesday night.
Not only did Jobs bring us the iPod, iPhone and iPad, he was also responsible for major breakthroughs in animation with Pixar (now owned by Disney). He has touched so many and will go down as one of the greatest inventors of our time.
Below are some of the best and most noteworthy comments about Jobs.
Apple's Board: "Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."
Apple CEO Tim Cook: "No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much."
President Obama: "Steve was among the greatest of American innovators -- brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it"
Bill Gates: "The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come."
Steve Wozniak "I did not expect it. It felt a lot like you just heard that, you know, John Lennon got shot, or JFK, or Martin Luther King."
Mark Zuckerberg: "Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you."
Jeff Bezos: "Steve was a teacher to anyone paying attention, and today is a very sad day for everyone who cares about innovation and high standards."
Bob Iger: "Steve was such an original, with a thoroughly creative, imaginative mind that defined an era. Despite all he accomplished, it feels like he was just getting started."
Alec Baldwin: "Sad about Steve Jobs. On par with Henry Ford, Carnegie and Edison."
Mark Cuban: "The PC era is officially over"
Michael Dell: "Today the world lost a visionary leader, the technology industry lost an iconic legend and I lost a friend and fellow founder. The legacy of Steve Jobs will be remembered for generations to come."
Larry Page: "He always seemed to be able to say in very few words what you actually should have been thinking before you thought it. His focus on the user experience above all else has always been an inspiration to me."
Twitter - "Because of you Steve, Apple is now longer just a fruit"
Twitter - "RT if you're touching an Apple product"
