The Oatmeal, a comics and articles website created in 2009 by Matthew Inman, is a fairly popular website. In our observation, it has a good combination of humor mixed with fact...depending on which comic you read, of course.
So, when Inman decided to share his thoughts on owning a Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) Model S sedan, it caught our attention. The following is from The Oatmeal, covering many aspects of not just owning the Model S, but other items surrounding the Tesla Motors brand as well:
(Quick links to Part 1 and Part 2.)
UPDATE - While we appreciate what Inman has done to bring Tesla to light, it turns out that the lengthy comic was aimed to butter-up Tesla in order to secure $8 million in donations to build a Tesla museum. If you read Page 2, you'll note that Inman got enough funds to save Tesla's lab, but not enough to actually build a museum. Inman's intentions are good (we suspect. Tesla was a pretty awesome dude), but this puts pressure on Elon Musk and Tesla Motors to respond.
Sure, Tesla is selling thousands of vehicles each quarter and creating a positive name for itself (and the EV segment as a whole), but the company is still growing. Asking for $8 million donation from Tesla right now would be a challenge; money at the company is already being stretched thing with the Gigafactory, current factory retooling, expansion of its Supercharger network, and so on. Plus, while Musk himself is probably wealthy outside of Tesla, most of what he's compensated for at Tesla is in stock, RSUs, etc...not cash.
We think Tesla will likely ignore this or issue a sensible corporate response if the comic garners more attention.
That said, here's part one of The Oatmeal's observations:
