The New iPad Stops Killing Notebook Sales, Industry Outlook Improves

April 4, 2012 12:06 PM EDT
Strong sales over March seem to suggest the notebook market could now be rebounding. The results come as a bit of a surprise given the introduction of Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) new iPad -- a product line which previously slashed into notebook sales -- early on in the month.

According to recent research from Digitimes, monthly sales for Acer were strong as the company is looking to adjust to thinner Ultrabook designs moving forward. In addition, Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) is said to be pushing an initiative called Thin Basic which promotes the creation of notebook lines with ultra-thin designs. Intel hopes to offer products which range in price from $600 to over $1000.

Digitimes also reported Apple will be looking to start producing a 15-inch MacBook Pro in mid-April, with initial shipment targets of 200,000 units. Starting in June, Apple will begin producing a 13-inch MacBook Pro model. Early expectations placement shipments in the 300,000 to 400,000 units range upon initial launch.

Shares of Apple and Intel are lower Wednesday.
