Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) is about 2 points lower today as it is looking increasing more likely that Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) will strike a deal with AOL. Googles revenue from AOL, while declining, was 11% of the company's total revenue in the first six months of 2005, versus 12% for all of 2004.
Even if a deal with AOL doesn't play out, Microsoft is making it no secret that they are going after Google's head. But it is also no secret that Google is going after Microsoft's. Google has clearly had the momentum on its side lately but, with about $40 billion in the bank, Microsoft can even the score quickly. Targeting more than 10% of the Google's revenue is step one, step two could be even more sinister. But with $7 billion in the bank Google is no slouch, plus you have to give them a slight intellectual edge. It is clear that Microsoft will not monopolize the Internet like they did the PC, but it is also clear that they will not lie down without a fight. The MSFT v. GOOG story is shaping up to be a one of the best corporate fights of all time!
