The 'C' Stands for 'China' (AAPL)

Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) is expected to release two iPhones at its September 10 event (and subsequent September 11 event in China) - the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C.

The iPhone 5C is expected to be the lower priced model and is expected to come in as many as 6 colors. Many in the U.S. believe the "C" stands for "cheap." However, that is not how some in other parts of the world see it.

Users of Chinese microbloging service Weibo, for example, believe the "C" stands for "China".

Either way, it is clear that the iPhone 5C was developed for China and other emerging markets. The flashy colors and lower price point will help the company gain ground in China, where it has seen varying success.

Landing the highly-anticipated China Mobile deal would also go a long way in helping drive user adoption of Apple's new phone. China Mobile has over 700 million mobile subscribers, or roughly 63% of the wireless market in the country. ISI's Brian Marshall recently estimated that, if a deal is reached, Apple could sell more than 5 million iPhones to China Mobile users though December, and nearly 38.7 million phones in 2014. Now that's a lot of "Cs."
