Tesla's (TSLA) 'Model S' Will Be ~20% Smaller than Model S

March 7, 2014 7:06 AM EST
Its no surprise that Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) will debut a tentatively-titled 'Model E' vehicle within a few years, but just what will the electric vehicle (EV) look like?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, speaking at a California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) meeting last week, commented that the Model S would be around 20 percent smaller than the current Model S. While specific dimensions weren't mentioned, that might mean a vehicle 156.8- by 61.6-inches, or a rather small vehicle by comparison, given the Model S's dimensions of 196- by 77-inches. That's probably not going to be the case with height taken into consideration and basic math wouldn't be adequate (one example floating around the Internet pits one pizza size versus another, coming to the conclusion that a 12-inch medium pie is more than twice as large as an 8-inch small.)

The smaller size could also take into consideration weight, though Musk might have just been referring to outside area at this point.

With the Model S getting around 265 miles (w/ 85-kWh battery) on a single charge, a 20 percent smaller version of the car, which might presumably be 20 percent lighter as well, poses an interesting possibility for Tesla. Will it be sportier? Unlikely, given that it will be an auto aimed at appealing to the masses, though a higher-performance version will probably be offered, just like the P85 version of the Model S. But, that's just pure speculation by us.

Shares of Tesla are indicated for a higher open Friday. The Musk part of the CPUC meeting is embedded below:
