Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) is expected to open its first battery-swapping stations by the end of this year.
SlashGear reported Wednesday that the first stations will open in California over the next few months.
While Tesla's Supercharger station markedly cuts down charging times for Tesla Model S owners, the battery swap obliterates every other way to charge the cars.
Robotic systems will drop the entire battery out of a Model S and replace it with a fully-charged one. The entire process will take around or less than 90 seconds.
Tesla demonstrated the technology about a year ago.
Shares of Tesla are down over 2 percent today.
