On Thursday night, Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA) debuted its new battery-swapping system, allowing for owners of the Model S sedan to stop at the station and have their used batteries swapped out for a new one.
Tesla will roll out the new systems later this year, starting with the route spanning Los Angeles to San Francisco and moving to the Washington-to-Boston corridor.
The swap will run from $60 to $80, or the equivalent of filling up a 15-gallon gasoline tank. Tesla CEO Elon Musk noted that drivers must reclaim their own battery on the return trip, or pay the difference for a new battery.
Each station will cost about $500,000 to build and will be alongside Tesla's quick-charging stations.
Shares of Tesla are flat in early trading Friday.
