Tesla (TSLA) Hires Noted Augmented Reality Expert for Autopilot Project

April 15, 2016 8:16 AM EDT

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is said to have hired a notable augmented reality expert as it looks to continually improve technology available in its electric vehicles.

Electrek.co said that Tesla has tapped the talents of Milan Kovac, who was Principal Engineer at SKULLY.

SKULLY made the first augmented reality motorcycle helmet "equipped with a built-in HUD," according to the report.

Kovac will join Tesla as Staff Software Engineer.

Tesla's debut of the Model 3 at the end of March saw the crowd notice a sparse interior with a large flat panel full of controls. With launch of the vehicle expected late next year, Tesla could be working to fine-tune its HUD system for higher-end versions of the vehicle, though the technology might also appear in base models.

Shares of Tesla are slightly positive in early trading.
