Tesla (TSLA) Feels the Hot, Stinging Winds of Competition Once Again

June 28, 2013 9:23 AM EDT
Tesla Motors (Nasdaq: TSLA) could be in for even stiffer (albeit well-equipped and wrapped in luxurious leather) competition.

Bloomberg highlights Maserati debuting its new Ghibli mid-sized sedan. The car will start at $65,600, which is just about in the same price range as Tesla's Model S sedan (starts at $62,400). Other competitors include Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6, and BMW 5-Series models.

Fiat-owned Maserati will equip the Ghibli with a Ferrari V6 for its base and 410-horsepower V8 in the top-end model.

The Ghibli is a venture away from Maserati's higher-end cars, which typically start well over the $100,000 mark. Though a buyer for a Tesla Model S is more eco-focused than the typical luxury car buyer, now having a name like Maserati might sway a few buyers.

Tesla's no slouch when it comes to fending off competition and shareholders are putting money behind that conviction: shares are up over 200 percent since the start of 2013 and some analyst peg the value of the company much higher, particularly when its Supercharger and battery-swap network make a broader expansion.

Into the open, shares of Tesla are down 0.3 percent.

NOTE: the definition of ghibli is "a hot, dust-carrying desert wind in North Africa, somewhat similar to the foehn."
