Tesla's (TSLA) Cross-Country Supercharger Network Nears Completion

January 14, 2014 11:36 AM EST
Tesla Motors' (Nasdaq: TSLA) Supercharger network in the U.S. is coming along well. In fact, the infrastructure is nearly complete for an avid Model S owner to be able to take a trip from New York to Los Angeles.

The latest data from Tesla's official Supercharger page has about 61 stations across the U.S. There are still a few large gaps (the one between Somerset, PA, and Maumee, OH, is about 293 miles, for instance), so the trip wouldn't be a worry-free venture. One station is expected to open in Ohio within the next week and several more are planned over the next several weeks, according to the site (no specific time frames have been offered).

Still, the build-out has been impressive for Tesla. It still plans on covering about 80 percent of the U.S. population by the end of 2014 and 98 percent (with parts of Canada included) by the end of 2015.

We're just anticipating Elon Musk's NY-to-LA trip, which will really affirm the network's capability.

Shares of Tesla are about flat in mid-day trading Tuesday.
