Sprint (S) and LG Making Waves with New Skiff e-Reader

January 6, 2010 5:51 PM EST
With an abundance of e-readers and smartbooks expected to be rolled out this year at CES, LG Electronics and Sprint Nextel Corp. (NYSE: S) are hoping to make themselves heard.

The Hearst Corp.-backed Skiff reader is currently larger and thinner than any e-reader or tablet device rumored or currently on the market. This will be the first consumer product to sport LG’s metal foil technology, which is a next-generation e-paper product that is based on ultra-this stainless steel foil and will be marketed as being far more durable than the glass products that it will be competing with.

The screen will be 11.5 inches, and billed as a convenient way to read the morning paper as media company’s like Hearst are try to find new ways to generate revenue. The Skiff will also be less than a quarter-inch thick and weighs just under a pound.

"This is consistent with Skiff's focus on delivering enhanced reading experiences that engage consumers, publishers, and advertisers," said Gilbert Fuchsberg, president of Skiff.

In addition, the Skiff reader will have built in 3G and Wi-Fi capabilities, and offers a week’s worth of use between charges.
