Spotify Plans Roll-out of Video Content to Android, iOS Apps

Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX) is on watch Monday following news that popular music streaming service, Spotify, is planning to release a video product.

The WSJ said Spotify is planning to release video content onto its Android app starting this week and the iOS app by the end of next week. Video content will be made available in the U.S., the U.K., Germany, and Sweden.

Spotify originally announced plans to distribute videos and podcasts last May. The company had been gradually testing video on its apps with about 10 percent of its user base in four launch markets over the last several months.

Most of the content consists of short snippets, though some companies are developing music-themed original content.

Spotify has around 75 million subs globally and 20 million paying subs.

Currently, Spotify is just paying partners to license content and doesn't see video as a money making segment out of the gate. There won't be any ads on the video, at least initially.

However, the action does point to how competitive the video-streaming market can get. Netflix is still the de facto king and isn't likely to cede that position anytime soon, even with the likes to Amazon and Google aiming to take a piece of the cake.
