Speculation Heats Up as Countdown to BB10 Launch Begins (RIMM)
Research in Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) official BlackBerry 10 launch is less than a week way, and the stock is becoming increasingly volatile, and so is the war of words among analysts and technology experts.
Some think RIM's BB10 will be dead on arrival. Others say demand from diehard Blackberry users will blow expectations out of the water. Investors are also paying close attention to enterprise acceptance of the BB10 and the new software used to support it.
In the past month, debate has been heated and expectations couldn't be more mixed. Within weeks, RIM was Upgraded or Downgraded at least six different times by six analysts, all of them respected, with little agreement on the outcome of the BB10 launch.
The consensus, it seems, is that there is little consensus.
Far from being an incremental change at RIM, the BB10 launch is shaping up to be a binary event, similar to an FDA drug approval, which makes trading highly speculative and potentially very profitable for those who are smart enough or perhaps lucky enough to get it right.
Today RIM rolled out enterprise software for its largest customers, paving the way for January 30th's big event, which most see as a make or break moment. And of course today the stock was also downgraded, again, which sent shares lower by 2.5 percent, making a fool of anyone stupid enough to own the stock. Yesterday it was the other way around and investors were hailed as geniuses. Whatever the case, time will soon tell, as RIM unknowingly plays a part in separating the wheat from the chaff among analysts and investors alike.
