Sony (SNE) Sees Vitas Sales Fall Substantially from Debut

December 29, 2011 12:08 PM EST
Although Sony (NYSE: SNE) sold 321,400 units of its Vitas within the first two days of its debut in Japan, AllThingsD is reporting Thursday sales have fallen dramatically in just its second week.

Citing research firm Media Create, AllThingsD says the company was only able to sell 72,479 units during the week before Christmas.

The large drop in demand might be attributed to several factors: a weak lineup of games, the high cost of the device, and/or talks there may be problems with the device itself. Early reports indicated the device would lag during game play and result in a freeze or crash of the game.

While Sony did come out with a statement saying the rumors were false and the new device is performing up to standards, these latest figures suggest otherwise.

Sony plans on launching the PS Vita in North America on February 22nd with a solid lineup of game titles.

Despite the concern, shares of Sony are trading up 2.9 percent to $17.58 on the day.
