Sony (SNE) Just Ate Microsoft's (MSFT) Gaming-Console Lunch...and Stole Its Money

January 7, 2014 2:08 PM EST
It appears we have a new gaming console king. At least, for now.

Sony (NYSE: SNE) announced on Tuesday that cumulative sales of the PlayStation 4 (PS4) computer entertainment system have reached 4.2 million as of December 28, 2013.

News compares to an announcement made Monday, which had Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) selling 3 million Xbox One units in 2013. That's a 43 percent shortfall compared with PS4 sales.

Two point to note: 1. Sony had a week jump start on Microsoft with sales last November, which could have been key heading into the holiday shopping season; and 2. The Xbox One was available in 13 countries by the end of 2013, versus 52 countries (or so) where Sony said the PS4 was available.

Still, the gap is pretty wide and it appears Sony is the current gaming console champ. While Microsoft is positive, Sony shares are down on Tuesday's trading session.
