According to the official Sony (NYSE: SNE) Computer Entertainment blog, the price of Sony's 160-GB version of the Playstation 3 gaming console will drop 17 percent from $299 to $249.
The 320-GB version will be sold for $299, down from it's current retail price of $399.99.
From the blog: "In addition, a limited edition inFAMOUS 2 bundle is now available at participating retailers across North America. The bundle retails for $299 and includes a 320 GB PlayStation 3, a copy of inFAMOUS 2 and a 30-day membership to PlayStation Plus."
Sony is acknowledging Microsoft's (Nasdaq: MSFT) accelerating Xbox 360 sales. At the E3 conference in June, Microsoft said it sold 55 million Xbox 360s, and sales in the first four months of 2011 were up 29 percent from the same period last year. Comparably, SCEI CEO Jack Tretton said Sony has sold 50 million since its introduction in 2006.
Just a few weeks ago, Nintendo slashed prices on its nearly brand-new 3DS handheld console by 32 percent from $249 to $169.
