Smartphones Outship PCs in Q410 - IDC (AAPL, NOK, RIMM, GOOG)

The smartphone is catching on...in a big way.

According to data from IDC, smartphone manufacturers shipped 100.9 million units in Q410, compared to 92.1 million units of PCs shipped worldwide.

a.k.a. - smartphones just out shipped PCs.

Q410 shipments saw an 87.2% growth, from 53.9 million in Q409 to the aforementioned 100.9 million in Q410.

Shipments in 2010 went to PCs overall, 346.2 million compared to 302.6 million smarphones.

In terms of manufacturers, Samsung saw the most explosive growth, about 438.9% year-over-year. HTC was second at 258.3%, and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) came in third at 86.2%. RIM (Nasdaq: RIMM) saw the slowest growth, at 41.4%.

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) still retained the top spot, shipping 28.3 million units for the quarter.

Of the results, Nokia saw some upside from 5 million sales of Symbian^3 phones, though a lot of sales came from older devices.

Apple saw increased sales in Japan, and enterprises are still adapting their devices.

RIM's growth came mainly from outside North America, and posted both the same growth for the quarter and year, according to IDC.

Samsung and HTC benefited from their diverse portfolios, many devices utilizing Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android OS.
