According to a report from research firm iSuppli, the demand for small or medium display panels, those for devices with a screen size smaller than 10 inches, will continue to grow due to the rapidly rising sales of smartphones and tablet PCs.
The research firm forecasts that the market for small and medium sized Thin Film Transistor LCD panels will expand at the fastest pace in three years.
The global shipments of TFT LCDs are set to rise 28.1 percent to 2.3 billion units from 1.8 billion in 2009, representing the largest growth for the market since 2007, when shipments surged 2007, according to iSuppli. Smart phone shipments are set to rise 35.5 percent this year, while Tablet PC shipments will grow by 787.3 percent.
The surge in shipments for Tablet computers in 2010 is mostly due to the overwhelming popularity of the Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPad, along with the numerous products that are trying to clone its success going forward.
“Sales of smart phones and tablets are booming in 2010 courtesy of the iPhone, the iPad and a range of competing products,” said Vinita Jakhanwal, director, small and medium displays, for iSuppli. “Because such devices focus on delivering a high-quality user experience, many are employing TFT-LCD displays that offer bright, sharp images—a move that represents a boon for the suppliers of these displays.”
The firm sees the shipments of TFTs slowing in 2011 and beyond, as the market for smart phones and tablets levels off.
