Samsung's Paltry Smartwatch Sales Numbers Bring Segment Into Question (AAPL) (QCOM)

Should Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) really consider making its rumored iWatch smartwatch?

According to reports out earlier, Samsung was said to have sold about 800,000 units of its Galaxy Gear smartwatch in the first two months of availability. However, TheVerge and others debunked the number, saying actual sales were closer to 50,000 units, while the 800,000 unit number was just the number Samsung shipped to partners and retailers.

The low number of Galaxy Gear shipments would make the product a flop, particularly with how much success Samsung has seen in the smartphone environment.

Further, market watchers will be keeping an eye on Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM), which announced that its Qualcomm Toq smartwatch would become available on December 2nd. The company's device is Android smartphone compatible and will have various other features that consumers might want for the starting price of $349.99 each.

While Apple has been a game-changer in many categories before (read: smartphones, tablets, music (iPod)), should the company move quickly to enter the market? It's also likely that Apple's iWatch would push sales for Samsung, Qualcomm, and other companies looking to make a wearable computing device.

Shares of Apple are up about 0.3 percent Tuesday.
