Samsung > Apple (AAPL) in Australia

According to new data from IDC’s ANZ Quarterly Mobile Devices Tracker for the third quarter, Samsung grew its presence in Australia for the third consecutive quarter and is now the number one mobile OEM in the region.

IDC noted shipments in mobile market consolidated in the third quarter, dropping 17 percent. Smartphones now make up 65 percent of the entire market. Google's (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android-based devices have ousted Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS. Android has a 49 percent position, while Apple holds 36 percent.

Conversely, New Zealand saw a 55 percent expansion in its smartphone market, now accounting for 43 percent of the overall mobile market. Of the total, Samsung has a 28.5 percent share, compared with 13 percent for Apple, in third place behind Huawei.

The data comes as Apple and Samsung have been battling it out over patent infringement issues globally. Australia has become a hot battleground, with Samsung getting a victory in the region only recently tied to its Galaxy Tab 10.1 device.
