Retina Display to Land on Apple (AAPL) Sooner than Expected

May 6, 2013 7:38 AM EDT
According to analysis from NPD Display over the weekend, Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) will bring out two new iPad models by the latter part of this year and into 2014. The firm said an higher-resolution Retina display-equipped version of the popular tablet will drop in calendar Q313. Prior chatter had the Retina display model not making an appearance until calendar Q114, but now an earlier update on the display is expected.

An updated processor is expected for the Q114 release.

Technology used in the device could be LTPS (low-temperature polysilicon) according to CNET. The technology is also used in Apple's iPhone 5.

Though there wasn't a breakdown in iPad versus iPad mini sales, total sales of the tablet rose 65 percent to 19.48 million units in Apple's latest quarter.

Shares are indicated for a higher open Monday.
