Retailers Gaining as Europe Reports Retail Growth in July (XRT)

Besides overall positive consumer sentiment in the markets following a less-than-expected reduction in U.S. nonfarm payrolls, the SPDR S&P Retail (NYSE: XRT) may be seeing some upside today from Europe. The Euro area reported that volume of retail trade increased 0.1% in July 2010, from June 2010. The EU27 also reported a 0.1% increase month-over-month. For year-over-year statistics, the Euro area had a 1.1% increase from July 2009, but rose only 1.0% for the EU27.

Big movers included the “food, drinks and tobacco” segment grew by 0.3% from June, and the non-food sector decreased by 0.1% in the Euro area. “Food, drinks and tobacco” grew by 0.1% in the EU27 and non-food increased by 0.2%.

Year-over-year, Euro area “food, drinks and tobacco” increase by 1.4% and non-food increased by 1.8%. The EU27 experienced growth in “food, drinks and tobacco” of 0.5% Y/Y and 2.5% in the non-food sector.

Shares of XRT are trading 2.3% to $39.07 in the early session.
